Grouse Care Home – Commercial Condensing Gas Boilers & Underfloor Heating

A newly built care home in the Orchard County providing 14 bedrooms with private ensuites. The care home heating consisted of underfloor heating throughout the common areas and radiant panel heating in each bedroom. There was a requirement to make savings by reducing BMS costs but still achieve the same level of control.

The Vitodens 200-W Cascade system was installed and utilises its advanced cascade controller to not only sequence boilers, balancing run hours and incorporating automatic changeover in the event of a boiler fault. But in this situation the contractor used the controller to give time and temperature control on 2 separate heating zones. One being the underfloor heating (a mixed circuit) and the other being the unmixed radiant panel zone. The entire system is weather compensated allowing the boilers to run in condensing mode as much as possible, only going over condensing temperatures when the radiant panel circuit demanded it during the peak of the winter.

Kelly Mechanical to date had been using single vitodens 200-W Boilers, and this was their first time using the full cascade kit. They commented “Normally doing a 2 boiler plantroom we could take 3-4 days to pipe up the boilers, this time by using the cascade kit we were able to assemble it in less than a day.”

The Vitodens Cascade Kit allowed two main goals to be achieved: Cost savings on initial install were made by eliminating the need for a BMS system, the resulting system could be argued to be superior in terms of efficiency by running the boilers at varying temperatures and full remote monitoring and control is available in future with the use of a Wi-Fi module. The second achievement was the labour & time saving produced by the Vitodens Cascade Kit, Kelly mechanical were delighted.
